Plants

Low blue-gray pads and magenta spring flowers. The pads look spineless until the glochids find you.

The green-trunked wash tree of the park’s Colorado Desert, blooming yellow in a good spring.

The tree that tells you the flats are ending and the cooler slopes toward Pioneertown and the pass have begun.

A hooked-thorn wash shrub that hosts desert mistletoe — and will snag a sleeve if you push through.

The smell after rain, and the shrub that holds most of the basin’s open ground together.

A slow Sonoran wash tree with iron-hard wood, listed with ocotillo and palo verde in the park’s south.

The rusty clumps on catclaw and mesquite that feed phainopeplas through the cool months.

A catalpa-family tree of the washes, and one of the few natives that towns here actually plant on purpose.

The gray workhorse of alkaline flats, roadsides, and lots that look too harsh for anything else.

The big-leaf tree of real water — Big Morongo’s woodland, not a desert willow lookalike.

The basin’s namesake yucca: slow, legally protected, and tied to cold winters.

A winter mustard that bolts early on lots and roadsides, the usual mix-up with Sahara mustard.

The basin’s wash mesquites: honey mesquite on many lots, screwbean in the hotter channels.

Bayonet leaves, a flower stalk like a pole, and the plant people mistake for a young Joshua tree.

A shrubby desert oak of the cooler juniper–pinyon slopes, easy to meet on the park’s west side.

Whip canes that leaf out after rain and carry scarlet flowers. More common on the warmer edges than on the Yucca Valley flats.

True willows of desert springs and creeks. Not the pink-flowered desert willow already in this wiki.

A winter annual that greens up fast on disturbed soil, then dries into fine fuel under the native shrubs.

The single-needle pine of the high west-edge woodland, above the open Joshua tree flats.

A wash plant that looks like a puff of smoke when it is leafless, and a flood warning when it lines the sand.

The weedy Russian thistle that dries into the rolling ball that piles on fences after wind.
