Highway 62
Twentynine Palms Highway · SR-62 · CA-62
Twentynine Palms Highway, State Route 62. The basin’s main street from the Morongo grade to the park’s north gate.
The corridor
State Route 62 is the east-west road people use to explain where they live. From the I-10 junction it climbs the Morongo grade, then runs through Morongo Valley, Yucca Valley, Joshua Tree, and Twentynine Palms before continuing east. “Down the hill” means descending that grade toward the Coachella Valley. Caltrans District 8 operates it. A stall in Yucca Valley at 5 p.m. is a basin-wide event because there is no parallel arterial.
What the drive is actually like
The highway is a commercial strip, a tourist pulse on park weekends, and a high-wind road. Dust cuts visibility. Washes cross the side streets more often than the main lanes, but the grade and the open stretches still strand cars in wind and in summer heat. The posted speed and the actual pace diverge when visitors brake for trees or turn left across traffic into a trailhead.
When it closes
Use Caltrans QuickMap for closures, not a group chat. A crash, a fire, or construction on 62 hits appointments, school runs, and both basin park gates at once. Highway 247, leaving Yucca Valley toward Landers, is a different road with different failures. It is not an automatic bypass. If you are new, learn the cross streets people actually say — Pioneertown Road, Aberdeen, the park entrances — rather than a mile marker.
Desk habit
Tag incidents to the towns they trap, not only to “the highway.” A closure above the grade isolates Morongo Valley from the rest of the basin. A closure in Twentynine Palms isolates the north gate and the base commute. District 8’s page and QuickMap are the two links worth keeping.
