Highway 247
Old Woman Springs Road · SR-247 · CA-247
Old Woman Springs Road. The north route out of Yucca Valley through Landers and Johnson Valley.
The road
State Route 247 leaves Highway 62 in Yucca Valley and runs north as Old Woman Springs Road through Landers, then toward Lucerne Valley and Barstow. It is the paved spine of the homestead grid and the usual approach to the Johnson Valley off-highway area. The Bureau of Land Management describes access from 247 at Old Woman Springs Road or Camp Rock Road. Services thin out quickly once you leave town, and cell service drops.
Different hazards than 62
Floods take the dips. Wind takes high-profile trailers. Distances feel longer because you cannot count on a store. A mess on Highway 62 does not mean 247 is fine; check QuickMap for each route. Night driving means jackrabbits, tortoises in the warm months on the pavement, and unlit turns onto dirt roads. Headlights off the shoulder are often someone who lives there, or an off-highway vehicle, not a lost tourist.
Training closures
About 53,000 acres of the Johnson Valley riding area is shared with the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center. Training days close that shared-use ground. The BLM page is the check before a weekend ride, and it warns that printed maps lag the real boundary. Do not invent a detour across a homestead lot because the highway feels empty.
How locals use it
247 is the Landers commute, the OHV haul route, and the long way toward the Victor Valley. It is not a second commercial strip. Fuel and food are a plan, not a hope. If you are meeting someone “on 247,” name the cross street. Old Woman Springs Road covers a lot of empty miles.
