Morongo Basin
the basin
The everyday name for these towns between the mountain pass and the base. Not a synonym for the whole High Desert.
Working definition
For this desk the Morongo Basin means Morongo Valley, Yucca Valley, Joshua Tree, Twentynine Palms, Pioneertown, Landers, Wonder Valley, Homestead Valley, Yucca Mesa, Johnson Valley, and the basin-facing side of Joshua Tree National Park. Two places are incorporated: the Town of Yucca Valley, in 1991, and the City of Twentynine Palms, in 1987. The rest is unincorporated San Bernardino County. Highway 62 is the string that ties the highway towns together.
Down the hill
“Down the hill” means descending the Morongo grade on Highway 62 toward the Coachella Valley and Interstate 10. Palm Springs is the other side of that grade: closer in miles than it feels, and different in elevation, summer heat, and county services once you enter Riverside County. People commute both directions. Weather often does not match. The basin can be windy and near freezing while the valley is mild.
Not the Victor Valley
Weather reports and county marketing sometimes say High Desert and mean Victorville, Apple Valley, and Lucerne Valley. When locals say they live in the high desert and then name a Highway 62 town, they mean this basin. Highway 247 connects the two regions. It does not merge their water districts, school districts, or news.
What actually structures a week
Groundwater, septic tanks on most older lots, a phased sewer inside Yucca Valley, wind, and a national park on the south side shape daily life more than a welcome sign. Learn which agency covers your parcel — town, city, or county — before you need a permit. The county’s site is the front door for everything unincorporated.
